June 15, 2021 – Workshop for pension trustees on advancing reconciliation

The Canadian Capital Stewardship Network invites you to join a workshop hosted in partnership with SHARE’s Reconciliation and Responsible Investment Initiative (RRII) on advancing Indigenous rights and reconciliation at Canadian pension funds.

Do you want your pension fund to take steps to advance reconciliation? Are you looking for strategies to embed reconciliation and Indigenous rights into your fund’s investment policies and practices? Do you have experiences with this work to share?

On May 2021, shareholders of TMX Group Ltd. voted overwhelmingly to support a resolution on Indigenous inclusion and reconciliation at the company’s annual and special meeting of shareholders. In April, SHARE, on behalf of the Atkinson Foundationfiled the proposal resolution at TMX Group Ltd. and the company later recommended a vote in favour of an amended version of the proposal. The nearly unanimous vote in favour of the shareholder proposal and the support of TMX Group Ltd. shows that investors are committed to advancing reconciliation, Indigenous inclusion and economic advancement at Canadian companiesThe support from TMX is the first time an Indigenous reconciliation or diversity proposal has ever been jointly endorsed by the board of directors of a Canadian company.

Investors can be major catalysts for the advancement of reconciliation in capital markets. Drawing from real-world examples of allied investor action and Advancing Reconciliation in Canada: A Guide for Investors (2020), this workshop for union-nominated pension trustees will explore tangible opportunities and case studies for pension funds to meaningfully contribute to reconciliation. It will highlight strategies to support the growth of the Indigenous economy and ensure respect for Indigenous rights. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn from like-minded peers in a structured discussion on how to push reconciliation objectives forward at their pension fund.

This 75-minute workshop is open to union-nominated asset owner board members in Canada and to a limited number of trade union representations and international allies. Hosted by the Canadian Capital Stewardship Network (CCSN) in collaboration with the Reconciliation and Responsible Investment Initiative (RRII), join us as we move from talk to action on reconciliation together.
